JCCA Policies and Guidelines
Judge Selection for Specialties
(Regular Classes & Sweepstakes)

  1. Judges for specialty regular classes and sweepstakes will be selected via membership ballot on a form approved by the JCCA Board.
  2. A ballot for judge selection will be sent to JCCA members annually.
  3. The ballot should be sent at least two years prior to the planned specialty; earlier is preferred.
  4. The ballot shall be returned to the secretary or to an independent entity approved by the JCCA Board. The ballot shall be counted by either an independent entity or a committee of three approved by the JCCA Board.
  5. The Show Chair or Specialty Support Committee will confirm the eligibility of judges receiving the highest amount of votes before extending an invitation to judge. Per AKC policy, visiting judges, regardless of their residency, may be approved to judge regular classes if they are approved to judge Japanese Chin in their own country and by an AKC-recognized registry.
  6. Candidates for sweepstakes judge must have bred five champions in any country. Candidates for sweepstakes judge must be a JCCA member and must have been a member of the JCCA for five years at the time the vote is counted. Contracts for judging sweepstakes at specialties will be signed only with JCCA members.
  7. Both regular class and sweepstakes judges must be in good standing with the JCCA and the AKC. Any judge who is not in good standing with the JCCA and the AKC is ineligible to judge JCCA Sweepstakes or Specialty regular classes. Loss of good standing with the AKC or JCCA is grounds for cancellation of the judging contract. This provision will be included in all JCCA judging contracts signed after these guidelines are passed.
  8. Judges who have judged a JCCA Regional or National Specialty (regular classes or sweepstakes) in the four years prior to the Specialty for which the ballot is intended, will be ineligible to judge at both the Regional and National specialty for the intended year.
  9. The judges receiving the most votes for National Specialty Judge and National Sweepstakes Judge will be offered the opportunity to judge at the National Specialty by the Show Chair; the Specialty Support Chair will offer the position if a Show Chair for the intended year has not been chosen. The judges receiving the most votes for Regional Specialty Judge and Regional Sweepstakes Judge will be offered the opportunity to judge at the Regional Specialty, should a regional specialty be planned for the year intended. If the top vote recipient is not available, or if the fee and expense reimbursement that the top vote recipient is willing to accept exceed what the JCCA Board approves, the position will be offered to the next judge on the list.
  10. If the chosen National or Regional Specialty judge is not approved to judge junior showmanship, an alternate AKC-approved junior showmanship judge will be selected for the specialty by the Show Chair or Specialty Support Committee.
